Summary
Analysis of the 2007 Census reflects a shift in demographics across the United Stateslargely due to the rise of immigrants and the slowing of growth for an aging white population. Minorities now make up more than half of the population in roughly 10% of the nation’s counties.Counties where minorities are the majority are becoming more prevalent, especially in areas where immigrants traditionally first settled. The increase in migration of African Americans to the South is also playing a significant role. Whites leaving communities are not replaced by other whites, but instead are replaced by minorities; a trend that will continue as more white boomers retire outside of densely populated communities.1
