Foward

The work contained herein is the documentation of a studio process run by faculty members of the University of Cincinnati and sponsored by the Live Well Collaborative and its corporate members. Three teams of students were tasked with discovering information and insights into the mindset of the Baby Boomer demographic as it related to the issues of Sustainability and the Eco-Conscious movement. These insights set the foundation for unique solutions that range from product design principles to knowledge tools used for gathering and interpreting consumer data. Participating in the studio process were faculty and students from the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, and the College of Business at the University of Cincinnati.

Introduction

PROJECT STATEMENT
Develop an understanding of the 50+ consumer and their behaviors regarding current sustainability trends. Assess the barriers and/or motivations for their actions and opinions as they apply to eco-conscious endeavors. Determine the level of knowledge they have about current sustainability initiatives. Discover what opportunities exist to further educate and inspire them to become more active participants in the movement.

Team ReThink

Our Goal

To help businesses determine how to best communicate to the 50+ consumer the value of purchasing sustainable, recyclable, and eco-friendly products. To reeducate the consumer, we must first find out how they behave and respond to sustainability concepts.

Team KegMama

Our Goal

“Green” messages have saturated much of the media consumers receive. Consequently, consumers aspire to live more ecologically friendly lifestyles. However, many consumers place the burden of responsibility on businesses. Our team examined the current perceptions of a refill system that would be corporately sponsored.

Team XGL+

Our Goal

Seven “consumer personas” were created to represent the major barriers to sustainability for fifty-plus consumers. We explored how combining these personas with specific market research survey, could enable clients to more easily identify barriers and therefore design products and business plans around them.
